From factory floors to family homes, Mirostowice ceramics tell the story of a regional industry presented at a new Zielona Góra exhibition
Many of the objects we use every day eventually disappear from memory, replaced by newer designs and changing fashions. The exhibition "Mirostowickie Zakłady Ceramiczne – Ceramics of Everyday Life" at the Lubusz Land Museum in Zielona Góra looks back at one of western Poland's best-known ceramic manufacturers through the items that once filled kitchens, dining rooms and cupboards across the country.
Running until 23 August 2026, the exhibition traces the history of the Mirostowice Ceramic Plants, an enterprise whose roots stretch back to the nineteenth century and whose products became familiar in households for generations.
A Factory Built on Local Clay
The story begins in Mirostowice Dolne, a village near Żary where rich clay deposits made ceramic production possible. In 1873, the German company Ullersdorfer Werke established works there, creating an industry that would shape the local community for more than a century.
Following the Second World War, production resumed under Polish administration. After nationalisation in 1947, the factory became known as Mirostowickie Zakłady Ceramiczne, continuing to manufacture household ceramics until the 1990s. Over those decades, the plant provided employment for local residents while becoming an important part of the region's industrial identity.
Objects Designed to Be Used
Rather than focusing solely on the factory's history, the exhibition explores the ceramics themselves and the role they played in everyday life.
Tableware, decorative pieces and household items illustrate how functional objects can also reflect changing tastes, manufacturing techniques and design trends. Many visitors may recognise patterns or forms once found in family homes, offering a glimpse into a period when locally produced ceramics were part of everyday routines.
By presenting these familiar objects in a museum setting, the exhibition highlights their cultural value as well as their practical purpose.
Preserving a Regional Legacy
Although production at the Mirostowice Ceramic Plants ended decades ago, the factory remains an important chapter in the industrial history of the Lubusz region.
The exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to explore that legacy through the objects it produced, connecting local manufacturing with the everyday experiences of the people who used them.
